DBS Checks for Tutors
What is a DBS Check?
A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a background check required for anyone working with children or vulnerable adults in the UK. Tutorwise requires an Enhanced DBS check for all tutors who offer sessions to students under 18.
Do I Need One?
- Required if you tutor students under 18 (even online sessions)
- Recommended for all tutors as it builds trust and improves your CaaS score
- Not required if you exclusively tutor adults
How to Get a DBS Check
- Apply through an umbrella body — Tutorwise does not process DBS checks directly. Use an accredited organisation such as:
- Personnel Checks
- DBS Online
- uCheck
- Choose Enhanced DBS — this is the level required for working with children
- Provide your documents — you will need proof of identity and address
- Wait for processing — typically 2-4 weeks, sometimes longer
- Upload your certificate — once received, upload it to your Tutorwise profile at Settings → Verification
What Happens on Tutorwise
- Your profile will show a "DBS Verified" badge once uploaded and confirmed
- Your CaaS (Credibility as a Service) score increases significantly with DBS verification
- Parents and clients can filter for DBS-checked tutors in the marketplace
- DBS status is checked during the tutor approval process
Costs
DBS checks typically cost £23-£50 depending on the umbrella body. Some organisations offer free DBS checks for volunteers.
Renewal
DBS checks do not expire, but Tutorwise recommends updating your check every 3 years. You can also subscribe to the DBS Update Service (£13/year) which allows instant re-checks.
