Transparent pricing is important to us. This guide explains all costs for tutors and students on Tutorwise.

For Students: No platform fees. You pay exactly what the tutor charges. For Tutors: 10% platform fee on bookings.

For Students: What You Pay

No Hidden Fees

You Pay Only:

Tutor's hourly rate
Session duration
No booking fees
No platform fees
No service charges

Example:

Tutor Rate: £40/hour
Session: 1 hour
You Pay: £40

Payment Processing

When Charged:

After session completes
Within 24 hours of completion
Never charged before session

Refund Policy:

Cancel 24 hours or more in advance: Full refund (minus Stripe processing fee)
Cancel less than 24 hours: No refund — tutor is compensated for late notice
Tutor cancels: Full refund always

For Tutors: Platform Fees

Standard Commission: 10%

What You Receive:

Session Price:      £100
Platform Fee (10%): -£10
You Receive:         £90

When Fees Apply

Charged On:

Completed bookings only

Setting Your Rates

Pricing Guidelines

Consider:

Your qualifications and experience
Subject and level (GCSE, A-Level, University)
Market rates in your area
Online vs in-person
Session duration options

Typical UK Rates:

Primary: £15-25/hour
GCSE: £20-35/hour
A-Level: £30-50/hour
University: £40-80/hour

Tip: Research similar tutors on the Marketplace to set competitive rates.

Package Discounts

Encourage recurring bookings with package deals:

Suggested Discounts:

5 sessions: 5% off
10 sessions: 10% off
20 or more sessions: 15% off

Example:

Regular: £40/hour × 10 = £400
Package: £36/hour × 10 = £360
Student saves £40, you secure £360 upfront

Refunds and Cancellations

Student Refunds

Cancellation Policy:

24 hours or more before session: Full refund (minus Stripe processing fee — see below)
Less than 24 hours: No refund
No-show: No refund

Stripe Processing Fee on Refunds:

Stripe does not return their processing fee when a refund is issued. The fee depends on where your card was issued:

Card origin	Fee deducted from refund
UK / EU / EEA	1.5% + £0.20
Non-EEA Europe (e.g. Switzerland)	2.5% + £0.20
International (US, India, Australia, etc.)	3.25% + £0.20

Example: £100 booking cancelled with 24h+ notice — UK card receives £98.30 back; US card receives £96.55 back.

Processing Time:

Automatically processed on cancellation
5-10 business days back to your card (depends on your bank)

Tutor Compensation

If Student Cancels:

24 hours or more before: £0 — student receives full refund (minus Stripe fee)
Less than 24 hours: 100% of session price — tutor keeps full payment
No-show: 100% of session price — tutor keeps full payment

Tax Implications

Tax Responsibility: Tutors are responsible for declaring and paying taxes on income earned.

For Tutors:

Income is self-employment income
Declare on tax return
Keep earnings records
Consider VAT if over £85k/year
