Stripe Setup

Connect Your Payment Account

Before you can receive payments on Tutorwise, you need to connect a Stripe account. This guide walks you through the entire process.

Note

Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes for most users. May take longer if additional verification is needed.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:

  • Government-issued ID (passport or driver's license)
  • Bank account details
  • Business information (if applicable)
  • Tax ID or National Insurance number
Important

Important: You must be 18+ to create a Stripe account and receive payments.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Navigate to Payments

  1. Log in to your Tutorwise account
  2. Go to Account → Professional Info
  3. Scroll to "Payment Settings"
  4. Click "Connect Stripe Account"

Step 2: Choose Account Type

New to Stripe?

  • Click "Create new Stripe account"
  • Follow Stripe's onboarding flow
  • You'll be redirected back to Tutorwise when complete

Already have Stripe?

  • Click "Connect existing account"
  • Log in to your Stripe account
  • Authorize Tutorwise access
  • Return to complete connection

Step 3: Provide Business Information

Individual Account:

  • Legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Home address
  • Tax ID / National Insurance number

Company Account:

  • Business name and type
  • Business address
  • Tax ID / Company number
  • Representative information

Step 4: Add Bank Details

Required Information:

  • Bank name
  • Account number
  • Sort code (UK) or routing number (US)
  • Account holder name

Verification:

  • Stripe may make small test deposits
  • Verify amounts in 1-2 business days
  • Confirm in Stripe dashboard

Step 5: Upload ID

Accepted Documents:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • National ID card

Requirements:

  • Clear, readable image
  • All four corners visible
  • Not expired
  • Matches your legal name
Tip

Photography Tip: Use good lighting and a plain background. Ensure all text is clearly legible.

Step 6: Review and Submit

Check all information is correct:

  • Personal/business details
  • Bank account
  • Tax information
  • ID documents

Click "Submit for Review"

Verification Timeline

Instant Approval (most cases):

  • Basic details verified immediately
  • Can start receiving payments right away
  • Full verification completes in background

Manual Review (some cases):

  • Takes 1-3 business days
  • Stripe may request additional information
  • You'll receive email updates

Status Check:

  • View in Account → Professional Info
  • Stripe dashboard: dashboard.stripe.com
  • Email notifications for status changes

Common Verification Issues

ID Rejected?

  • Ensure photo is clear and complete
  • Check ID hasn't expired
  • Try different document type
  • Contact support if persistent issues

Bank Details Incorrect?

  • Double-check account number and sort code
  • Ensure account is in your name
  • Some accounts (savings, business) may require additional verification

Address Mismatch?

  • Address must match ID and bank records
  • Provide proof of address if requested
  • Update ID if recently moved

After Approval

Connection Confirmed:

  • Green checkmark in Account settings
  • "Connected to Stripe" status
  • Ready to receive payments

Test Your Setup:

  • Complete a test booking (if possible)
  • Check payout schedule
  • Verify bank connection

Managing Your Stripe Account

Viewing Payouts

In Tutorwise:

  • Go to Financials → Payouts
  • See pending and completed payouts
  • Download statements

In Stripe Dashboard:

  • Visit dashboard.stripe.com
  • View detailed transaction history
  • Manage bank accounts
  • Update business information

Payout Schedule

Default Schedule:

  • Weekly automatic transfers
  • Paid every Friday
  • Minimum payout: £10

How It Works:

  1. Student completes session Monday
  2. Payment processes by Tuesday
  3. Added to your payout batch
  4. Transferred Friday
  5. In your bank Monday-Wednesday

Updating Bank Details

  1. Log in to dashboard.stripe.com
  2. Go to Settings → Bank Accounts
  3. Add new bank account
  4. Verify with test deposits
  5. Set as default
  6. Remove old account (optional)

Troubleshooting

Can't connect Stripe?

  • Clear browser cache
  • Try different browser
  • Disable ad blockers
  • Check Stripe is available in your country

Payouts not arriving?

  • Check bank details are correct
  • Verify minimum payout reached (£10)
  • Allow 2-5 business days
  • Contact support if delayed

Account suspended?

  • Review Stripe's email for reason
  • Provide requested information
  • Contact Stripe support directly
  • May take 5-7 days to resolve
